ClamAV on Debian Stable (Etch)

Etch does not update ClamAV often enough. When our version is too old we can just update virus definition 6 times per days.
By default, it tries to download new version 24 times a day and this stupid antivirus stops working if it cannot update his definition.

So, if you don’t upgrade ClamAV you should configure Freshclam to update the virus definition less than 6 times a day. Otherwise you will have a lot of error messages of timeout.

/etc/clamav/freshclam.conf

# Check for new database 2 times a day
Checks 2
DatabaseMirror db.local.clamav.net

A better solution can be to keep Clamav updated.
A non official team work on Volatile update of Debian Stable.

I just added this line in my /etc/apt/sources.conf :

deb http://volatile.debian.org/debian-volatile etch/volatile main contrib non-free

Then run :

apt-get update
apt-get upgrade

And now Clamav is up to date.
